On a day where Widnes pulled off a shock victory over Huddersfield Giants, Wakefield set out to atone for a 36-0 defeat at The Stoop in March. The home side set about their business in right way and held a 22-0 lead before conceding for the only time in the game just after the hour.

The side from the capital made life difficult for themselves by conceding five penalties inside the first 15 minutes.

The Wildcat's New Zealand second rower, Ali Lauitiiti then put Vince Mellars through a gap in the Broncos defence for the opening try on five minutes and romped over himself on 28 minutes.

Centre Dean Collis also touched down, finishing off a flowing move, and former Broncos stand off Paul Sykes kicked three goals to put the Wildcats into an 18-0 half-time lead.

The Broncos chances of a comeback were dashed in the second half when stand-off Michael Witt went off with a shoulder injury and Michael Robertson was sin-binned by referee Tim Roby for delaying a Wakefield re-start.

The home side were quick to take the advantage, with loose forward Danny Washbrook's pass setting up second rower Danny Kirmond for the Wildcat's fourth try of the afternoon.

In a game played in constant drizzle, Wakefield began to make errors of the their own in a flat second half and Broncos prop Scott Wheeldon took Chad Randall's pass to burst over from close range.

Shane Rodney was good for the extras but the two points were quickly cancelled out by a second penalty from Sykes which proved to be the last the score of the encounter.
