Preview: 2024 Super League Round 7: Hull KR vs London Broncos

James Booth • 4 April 2024

The London Broncos have their third Super League away game of 2024 this Sunday as they face off against Hull KR at Craven Park. This is the first game that the Broncos have played against Hull KR since 6th September 2019, where the Broncos walked away 20-16 victors in front of a crowd of 8,020 at Craven Park. The Broncos have had a difficult beginning to their 2024 Super League campaign, losing their first 6 games to St Helens Saints (40-4, click here to read the full match report), Catalans Dragons (0-34, click here to read the full match report) Hull FC (28-24, click here to read the full match report), Wigan Warriors (22-60, click here to read the full match report), Warrington Wolves (4-58, click here to read the full match report) & Huddersfield Giants (6-26, click here to read the full match report).

Hull KR have also played six games so far this season and are currently sat in 5th place after winning 4 (0-22 vs Hull FC, 22-12 vs Leeds Rhinos, 12-24 vs Huddersfield Giants & 34-10 vs Hull FC) and losing 2 (17-10 vs Salford Red Devils & 20-22 vs Warrington Wolves) games so far this season.

Speaking ahead of our Round 7 clash on Friday, Hull KR head coach Willie Peters says “There’s no easy games in Super League. If you look at London’s performances against Catalans and Wigan, they have stepped up really well. Even Hull (FC) away, they should have probably got the win there.

“This game is extremely important to us, like every game is. The whole coaching staff have looked thoroughly into London, and they ask a lot of questions.

”When you look at their attacks, they’ve got really nice shape and we need to be (switched) on defensively like we have been and then with the ball we need to ask some questions of them and put some fatigue in them.

“Our focus is on Friday night. It’s an important game after a derby. We want to pride ourselves for being up again after a derby because some teams drop in intensity after they have a spike with a derby, but we pride ourselves in making sure that we stay at the levels that we want to be at”.

Also speaking on this Friday’s game is Hull KR player Sauaso Sue who says:

“I think they (London) are a big threat; they have nothing to lose.

“They have competing really well in the last couple of weeks and in the games that I have seen we have to make sure that we turn up, make sure that we have the right mindset and build on the last couple of weeks with how we have been playing and hopefully get the job done.”

Ahead of this Saturday’s fixture Broncos assistant coach, Jordie Hedges, says “It’s been a good week, we’ve got plenty of learning done. Having a look at Hull KR, not had much time to turn it around but looking forward to getting out there again and trying to get our first victory.

“Hull KR are very effort based; they don’t stop working. They are going to test us again through the middle, so it is another test which we are looking forward to.

”You can see that the things KR are doing off the field, it’s good. It’s 6 consecutive home games sold out, it’s awesome and what the game needs. For the boys to play in front of this crowd is massive.”

Also speaking to Broncos media was Rhys Kennedy, who spent last season with tomorrow’s opponent, Hull KR. Kennedy says “They’re going pretty good. I know how they play; they try and get in the cycle with teams and grind it out. They invest a lot of energy defensively so there’s no secrets with how they play.

“We’ve been playing a lot better the last two weeks, so focus is really on us and getting better as a team.

“I’ve taken on the ownership a little bit more and found my voice a little bit more, so I am enjoying it, it’s something different and I have really been able to grow from it”.

Apart from their defeat to Warrington in March, Hull KR haven’t lost a game at home since May 2023. Therefore, it is obvious that this fixture is going to be a tough one for the Broncos to take on. In addition to the capacity attendance at Craven Park tomorrow, Hull KR have managed to put together a playoff contending team in the past two seasons and the Broncos will definitely need to be in at least gear 4 from the opening whistle if they would like to have any chance of leaving Hull with their first win of the season.

LONDON BRONCOS V BRADFORD BULLS (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (12) 24, Bradford Bulls (10) 34 London Broncos ended their 2025 home season with a defeat against Bradford Bulls, blown away by 40 minutes of power, strength and not a little skill. The Bulls, easily the physically biggest team the Broncos have faced this season, were completely outplayed for the first 35 minutes, when London might reasonably have hoped for a three- or four-try lead. In the eighth minute, the Bulls made a handling error inside their 10 and their desperate defence went too far as they were penalised for a ball-strip two metres from their line. This time, the Broncos made Bradford pay, Luke Polselli taking a short Connor O’Beirne pass and running through a large hole in the defence. Jack Smith, as he would do after every try, added the extras. Polselli figured frequently in attack, unfortunately knocking on five metres away from a second score, but then delivering a superb grubber kick that he almost reached, but Jayden Okunbor touched down moments before the London No.6. It led to a goal-line dropout which the Bulls were able to defend. Quite how much Bradford were struggling was shown by head coach Brian Noble, who worked as a mentor with the Broncos player-head coach Andrew Henderson at The Hive in 2015, came down to pitch-side to deliver tactical and technical advice first-hand. In the 26th minute, London again applied pressure on the Bulls line and, from dummy half, Brandon Webster-Mansfield burrowed under the markers for London’s second score. A third Broncos score before half-time might have put the game beyond Bradford’s reach. Instead, the Bulls made a key substitution, sending on the veteran Chris Hill. The prop, a winner of 41 international caps for England and Great Britain and almost 400 games in Super League, made it a personal crusade to offload every time he carried the ball. The game’s turning point came with a 35th-minute penalty to Bradford just inside London’s half. A kick inside the 20 gave the Bulls all the territory they required, especially when they got a repeat set of tackles. After a couple of carry-ups, the ball was sent to the left where Guy Armitage, given his chance in rugby league by the Broncos, forced his way over.
