Connor O’Beirne’s first London Broncos interview

New signing Connor O’Beirne joined up with the London Broncos squad this week after flying over from Sydney.

Whilst he was undoubtedly given a warm reception by his new teammates, the freezing temperatures and tough pre-season session from Head Coach Mike Eccles would have been an introduction to scare off the faint hearted. However, an opportunity to play for London Broncos and show his talents on these shores is something O’Beirne has been long waiting for.

After impressing back in his homeland playing for the likes of Toukley and Maitland Pickers, the 27-year-old has spent the last few seasons playing in France’s elite competition with both Lezignan and Carcassone.

After his deal came to an end in France, O’Beirne believes now is the right time to try his hand here in England;

“It’s something that I’ve been interested in doing for a while. I’ve been playing in France and learnt a lot there playing a pretty good level of footy and during the winter I’ve been back in Australia playing for Maitland in the Newcastle competition and I learned a lot, they’ve got a really good coach.

“I know a fair bit (about the club). I already knew the welfare manager, Marty, from back in Australia so he has been feeding me some stuff so I’ve actually followed London a fair bit over the last couple of years. I played against Corey Norman when he was playing over in France and followed their journey when they came over here and won the Championship in 2023.

Standing at almost two metres tall, O’Beirne adds considerable height to any side but particularly in the backs and he believes he is ready to hit the ground running for his new club;

“I play in the halves but I’d say I have a big kicking game and I like running the footy and I’m a big body so I like taking the line on.

“I’ve been doing a fair bit of running in Australia so I am fit but the session we did today was still very tough having just come off the plane but it was good and I’m excited.”

Connor O’Beirne is sponsored by Jensen Property Management.

LONDON BRONCOS V YORK CITY KNIGHTS (by David Ballheimer) London Broncos (6) 6, York City Knights (10) 36 London Broncos conceded four tries in 18 early second-half minutes which allowed York RL Knights to run away with the game at a cold and blowy Cherry Red Records stadium. The dismal chill that developed through the early evening was rather indicative of the London performance. It all seemed very different in bright warm sunshine during the opening exchanges, and it was the Broncos who scored first, in the eighth minute. The possession went almost 100 metres starting with an excellent kick return by Chris Hellec. A penalty late in the possession essentially gave a repeat set, starting five metres from the York line and, a few tackles later, the ball was fed to the left wing, where Liam Tindall was able to squeeze over in the corner. Hellec’s conversion from the touchline was superb.

POST MATCH REACTION: Mike Eccles following York defeat London Broncos Director of Rugby & Performance Mike Eccles has said there will still plenty of positives despite falling to defeat to York at The Cherry Red Records Stadium. Broncos took the lead in the first half through Liam Tindall but wouldn't score again as York would run out comfortable 36-6 winners. Despite the scoreline Eccles says there are positives and says the team will keep working to turnaround the run of results. #WeAreLondon
