Jack Campagnolo delighted to be playing for London Broncos again after “toughest time in my career”.

James Booth • 2 August 2024

In an interview yesterday with Broncos media, Jack Campagnolo opened up about the back injury which he suffered which has kept him out for several months of the 2024 Super League season, describing the time off as the “toughest spell” in his career.

Campagnolo, the 26-year-old halfback, joined the Broncos at the beginning of this season following an excellent 2023 season for Souths Logan Magpies, scoring 3 try’s and kicking 90 goals which generated 192 points for his team. Campagnolo has also previously played for Northern Pride in the QLD Cup (2018-21), Wynnum-Manly Seagulls in the QLD Cup (2021) & South Sydney Rabbitohs Reserves (2022) in the NSW Cup.

Campagnolo started the season strong, earning himself a starting place at halfback in the first 5 Rounds of the Broncos 2024 Super League season, but a back injury ruled him out of playing any further Rugby League until 2 weeks ago vs Leigh (Round 18) where he came on as an interchange. Jack then started at halfback last Friday at Craven Park vs Hull KR.

Speaking on the injury which ruled him out of action for 13 Rounds of the 2024 season, Campagnolo says “It was probably the toughest time of my career to be honest. I had a few dark days and didn’t know if I would be back playing at all”.

Jack also mentioned the nature of the injury which he sustained and how this made things all the more complicated and nerve wracking for him in his estimated recovery time-  “It was a back injury so you can’t put an end mark on it like you can with a broken leg/arm, it was a week by week basis and it kept dragging out longer than I thought but I’m so glad to be back and really appreciate playing footy again once you are out for so long”.

Jack then expanded on his feelings towards those around him who are helping him get back to match fitness, stating that “getting injured makes you train even harder and makes you appreciate the staff more who help you and you knuckle down and make sacrifices to get back in so you can take the positives out of it”.

Unfortunately, in our home defeat to Castleford Tigers at Ebbsfleet, fellow halfback James Meadows picked up an injury which may rule him out of playing for a few weeks which is, of course, devastating to the team but offers an opportunity to throw Campagnolo straight back into the deep end of playing, which he did last Friday vs Hull KR as he played the majority of the 80 minutes.

Campagnolo says “It’s very unfortunate for Jimmy, it would have been good to have a few more games with him but got to take on more of the role of steering the team on now so I feel very comfortable doing that which comes second nature to me, so I want to try and do that this weekend against Catalans”.

Jack will undoubtably be a key member of the squad in the final 8 weeks of the season and if you would like to see him play live during our final 4 home games of the Super League season in Wimbledon, you can click here to get your tickets now!

MATCH PREVIEW: Toulouse Olympique vs London Broncos London Broncos head into one of the stand out fixtures of the season on Sunday when they make the trip to the south of France to take on Toulouse Olympique. Not only is it a visit to the side topping the Championship table but it is also the destination of one of the best days in the club's recent history. Securing promotion against Toulouse in 2023 was the last meeting between the two sides but despite the Broncos coming out on top that day it is the French who will be favourites on Sunday. Broncos come into this game on the back of a losing run but shoots of improvements were clear to see in the narrow defeat to Widnes last time out and will be boosted by the squad named. Squad Information Mike Eccles has named the 21-man travelling party for this weekend’s trip to Toulouse as Brandon Webster-Mansfield is named for the first time since arriving. Alongside Webster-Mansfield we also Liam Tindall and Connor O’Beirne return, coming as a huge boost for the squad. Sam Winney also returns to the 21 for the first time since breaking his jaw in the away game at Barrow. Jack Smith who is on dual registration from Leeds Rhinos also joins the group after scoring two tries on his debut for the club against Widnes Vikings. Who has played for both? Toulouse Olympique & London Broncos It’s pretty common when we do these articles that there are a number of current players playing for the opposition, but perhaps Sheffield Eagles and Toulouse Olympique win the record for the highest number this season. So, before you all guess these five, Toulouse have 5 players in the current squad who have featured for London Broncos; Paul Ulberg, Ollie Ashall-Bott, Greg Richards, Callum Gahan and Rob Butler. Let’s focus on some of the players that no longer don the colours of either side and their history with us both; Rhys Curran An Aussie born French international, Curran spent two seasons at London Broncos before hanging up his boots. Still residing in London you can regularly expect to see Rhys coming down to The Cherry Red Records to support his former teammates. However, he can count a number of the Toulouse players as former teammates as he spent a very fruitful four seasons playing for the club between 2016 and 2019 and prior to that he played in Elite VIII for Villeneuve. Through residency (living for three years in France) Curran would play three times for the French national team in 2018.
