Match Report: Halifax Panthers

London Broncos 58 - 12 Halifax Panthers

London Broncos secured the League Leaders’ Shield with a 58–12 victory over Halifax, claiming the second championship in the club’s history. Fulham won the old Second Division title in 1982–83, during the club’s third season.


Halifax created the first scoring opportunity, but a misplaced pass on the last tackle was collected by Gairo Voro, who advanced 20 metres before winning a penalty. London moved quickly from the resulting set, with Voro sending Rob Mathias over from 10 metres. Voro was unable to add the conversion.


The Broncos extended their lead from the restart. Dean Hawkins’ kick towards the right corner was mishandled by Luckas Sableman-Blue, giving London a scrum. Voro moved the ball to Neil Tchamambe, who crossed in the corner. Voro again missed the conversion.


Halifax responded in the 14th minute. Following a repeat set, Jesse Soric’s grubber on the last tackle was grounded by Lloyd Roby just inside the dead-ball line. Soric converted to reduce the deficit to 8–6.


London restored their advantage in the 24th minute with a move that shifted the ball from left centre to the right wing through Voro, Hawkins and Alex Walker. Walker then found Tchamambe, who crossed in the corner. Voro’s conversion attempt went wide.


A long restart from Roby gave London possession and Voro then kicked a penalty to the 30-metre line. Two tackles later, he broke through and ran 20 metres to score. This time, Voro converted.


Ninety seconds later, Finley Glare made a break from dummy-half and sent Mathias over for his second try. Voro added the conversion.


London scored again on their next possession. Hawkins kicked high on the last tackle and Walker outjumped Connor Davies, juggling and regathering the ball before grounding it for his 97th try for the Broncos. Voro converted.


Another London set ended with Hawkins kicking on the last tackle. Sableman-Blue knocked the ball on while attempting to make the tackle on Tchamambe, giving the Broncos possession close to the Halifax line. Marcus Stock crossed for London’s sixth try, with Voro adding the extras.


The opening stages of the second half saw several errors from both sides. London were penalised for an incorrect play-the-ball, conceded two further penalties and lost possession twice. Mathias was sin-binned for a late hit, leaving the Broncos with 12 players. Halifax were unable to turn the extra man into points, losing ground through a series of handling errors.


London scored next despite being down to 12 men. Hawkins’ kick was collected by Tchamambe, who completed his hat-trick. Voro converted.


The restart was then knocked on by Brandon Webster-Mansfield, but Halifax again failed to capitalise, losing possession before they could build pressure.


A powerful run from Sadiq Adebiyi was stopped by a high tackle, giving London another attacking opportunity. From dummy half, Siliva Havili identified a gap in the Halifax defensive line and forced his way over from 10 metres. Voro added the conversion.


Halifax responded with their second try in the 61st minute. Soric made the initial break before Darius Carter continued the move down the left-centre channel. Ben Will supported the play and crossed behind the posts, allowing Kieran Rush to convert.


London regained control after the restart. Halifax’s Ben Tibbs kicked beyond the in-goal area, giving the Broncos a seven-tackle set. London used the full set before Mathias completed his hat-trick.


The Broncos added another try as they continued to move the ball quickly and made use of the carries from Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Adebiyi and Lewis Bienek. Voro finished the move for his second try of the afternoon, although he was unable to convert.


With the final hooter confirming the 58–12 scoreline, Campbell-Gillard was presented with the League Leaders’ Shield, marking London Broncos’ second championship title.
