Wigan Warriors vs London Broncos - who has played for both?

Jake Watson • 20 June 2024

There may be 227 miles between Wimbledon and Wigan but that hasn’t stopped lots of players in the past turning out for both sides.

We’ve picked out some legends from the past and maybe some others that had slipped your mind.

Martin Offiah

A man who needs no introduction to fans of either club - one of the most famous to ever play Rugby League. Offiah was born in London before making his name in Rugby League at Widnes scoring 181 tries in just 145 games even becoming world club champion in 1989. It was in 1991 that Offiah joined Wigan Warriors and what followed was another remarkable haul of tries, scoring 186 times in 159 and picking up 12 trophies along the way. After leaving Wigan, Offiah joined London Broncos and whilst in the latter stages of his career was a part of one of the best sides in the clubs history which culminated in the Challenge Cup final in 1999.

Shaun Edwards

Another icon of the game Edwards was born in Wigan in 1966 and went on to play for them 466 times. Playing for Wigan, Edwards won a record eight championships, and a record nine Challenge Cups. In total he played in eleven Challenge Cup finals, also a record. He was voted Man of Steel in 1990 and is an inductee of the Wigan Hall of Fame. Edwards had two spells at London Broncos in 1997 and 1999 scoring 23 tries and being part of the side that reached the Challenge Cup final in 1999.

Tony Clubb

Born in Kent, Clubb is a product of the London Broncos academy where he would go on to feature for the club 149 times where he even captained the side. Following financial issues in 2013 Wigan swooped to sign both Clubb and Dan Sarginson. Clubb went on to play 157 for Wigan Warriors before retiring and is now the assistant coach at Leigh Leopards.

Dan Sarginson

Born in Australia but Sarginson was raised in Hemel Hempstead, where he attended Cavendish School, and played for England as a schoolboy. He played for Hemel Stags at junior level before joining London Broncos. Sarginson broke through to the first-team in 2011 and quickly established himself as a key player scoring 16 tries in 49 games. Sarginson joined Wigan Warriors in 2014 and enjoyed two spells at the club either side of playing for the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL.

Kai Pearce Paul

Whilst never appearing for the London Broncos first-team Pearce-Paul was born in Lewisham and a bright prospect in the academy before Wigan swooped and offered him a four year deal to head up to Lancashire. The younger brother of Kam Pearce-Paul who played for London Broncos between 2016-18. Kai has since enjoyed an incredible rise in the game, after establishing himself at Wigan and at international level with England, Pearce-Paul now stars in the NRL for Newcastle Knights.

Abbas Miski

Miski is one of the most prolific wingers in the Super League but it was at London Broncos where Miski first played in England. Born in Australia, Miski first starred for Manly Sea Eagles in the NRL before joining Broncos, then in the Championship, in 2021. After scoring an impressive 19 tries in just 21 games Miski was snapped up by Wigan in 2022. After initially struggling to breakthrough at Wigan, Miski rejoined Broncos on loan in 2023 but featured just once before returning to Lancashire and making a first-team spot his own.

Ramon Silva

Born in Brazil, Silva moved to London aged just 3 and started his rugby league career at the age of 15 with Elmbridge Eagles. After playing just four games he was subsequently picked up by the Broncos academy. He spent three seasons in London’s academy, where he played alongside his now Wigan team-mate Kai Pearce-Paul. Silva was snapped up by Wigan in 2021 signing a two year deal but rejoined Broncos on loan in 2023 where he featured regularly for the first team. Silva joined Barrow Raiders on a permanent deal in 2024.

Harvie Hill, Zac Eckersley & Harvey Makin

In 2023 Wigan Warriors and London Broncos announced a dual registration partnership allowing some of the brightest prospects at Wigan to play for Broncos in the Championship. This deal also saw Abbas Miski return to the club although he would feature just once. Makin would then rejoin the club on-loan this season where he featured regularly, making his Super League debut during his month-long stay.

WHO HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH? London Broncos & York Knights London Broncos play host to York Knights on Saturday but can you tell me what players that have had both clubs play host to them? We have picked out some to have played for both in recent years but can you add any more to the list below? SAM DAVIS A London Broncos academy product, the Leicester born hooker has enjoyed two spells in the capital, sandwiched either side of a spell in the yellow and black of York. Davis played for London between 2016-2021 before moving to York signing a two year deal, however injuries meant he never really settled and rejoined London in 2023 initially on loan before signing permanent terms. Following relegation from Super League at the end of the 2024 season Davis would move to Salford however financial issues there has meant Davis has once again signed dual-registration terms. So, whilst it won’t be this weekend we could see more of Sammy in a Broncos jersey in the future.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Sheffield Eagles match moved to Rosslyn Park FC London Broncos can confirm that the upcoming match with Sheffield Eagles on May 11th will now take place at Rosslyn Park FC. The decision has been made due to the uncertainty of the availability around The Cherry Red Records stadium with AFC Wimbledon potentially in play-off action on this date. Despite no current game definitely taking place on this date we have decided to make the decision now to avoid any late changes and allow fans from both teams to arrange necessary travel arrangements. The venue of the club's training ground at Rosslyn Park FC has been chosen to host this fixture due to its familiarity to supporters and players and therefore retaining home advantage. Rosslyn Park FC was the Club’s home ground during the 2021 season and has since been used to host fixtures for the London Broncos Women and the men’s Challenge Cup & 1895 Cup fixtures.

Paul Sykes breaks another record! London Broncos all-time record points scorer Paul Sykes has become the first player in history to play in 27 consecutive seasons – and according to the Rugby League Record Keepers Club, that’s a new record. Sykes, who will turn 44 in August and was a member of the England squad for the 2008 World Cup, made his first competitive appearance of the 2025 season for Dewsbury Rams in Sunday’s Betfred League One fixture against Rochdale Hornets. And the man who previously held that record is Gus Risman, the Welsh Rugby League great who was a founder member of the sport’s Hall of Fame, having come north to play for Salford in 1929, then moved to Cumbria after the War to make more than 300 appearances for Workington Town, leading them to Wembley victory over Featherstone Rovers in the 1952 Challenge Cup Final.
